Baby I’m back!!!

I know it’s been a while… what, like two years or so… but that is how life goes sometimes… I don’t have time for playing games like I used to… but I want to get back into doing more interviews with artist in the industry and posting about some great games soon…

I have been more an artist who digs games lately… but believe me I am still a gamer who digs art at heart.

Here are some samples of the works I have done in the game area… as you can see there has been a big progression over the time.

This was my first digital piece done back in 2009 trying my hand with some fan art…

Gears…Grind Baby Grind!

It is known by many as the game that defined the third person shooter for this generation of gamers.  There are many games that have spawned based on the cover system but none hold the popularity as the Gears of War franchise.

The first game introduced us the world of Sera.  More importantly it introduced us to the Locust.   A deadly force that has attacked mankind not from the skies, but from underneath their very feet.  The game was a smash to play through.  The cover system (new for 2006) was fun to play and battle in, the enemies were tough as nails and the experience was very memorable.  It was kinda on the short side, but the multi-player was plenty of fun.

In 2008 Gears of War 2 hit.  It was an instant classic here! Epic took all the things that were great in Gears 1 and gave it the ‘ol sequel steroid shot of bigger action, better graphics, and more game play.  The campaign made the first one look like a walk in the park.   It introduced a new enemy type to the game…a sort of flood like third army type.  The game finished with a whole lot of death on the human’s side and the Locust’s side.  The main attraction of this sequel turned out to be the Horde mode.  It was truly a “bonding” experience as players were forced to fight together or die alone.

In less than a year, Gears of War 3 will be upon us all.  Many of the core elements in the story have changed drastically from the first two titles.  The first game was COG VS Locust.  The second game was COG VS Locust as well along with “who the hell are these discolored locust” mixed in.  Both titles were heavily militarized.  In the third title the Military might of the Cog has been broken with the sinking of Jacinto.   A major new game play mode will be a new 4 player campaign mode and a new arcade mode.

The Locust Horde has seen it’s own set backs as well.  There is an emergence of the Lambent.  Imulsion is having a bad affect on the Locust introduced us to the Lambent in  the second game.  Now in the third title we get to see the evolution of these creatures.  As they attack and become more of a threat don’t think the Locust are gone forever.  Think Halo Series with the triple fighting going on between Humans,  Covenant, and the Flood.

The third title is easily going to be Microsoft’s Big hit of 2011.  It will represent 360’s first trilogy to start and finish on the system.  It will represent the the graphical and technical leaps from 2006-2011 and will represent what the 360 can do as a system.  The Gears franchise has always set the bar for what this generation of games can accomplish.  Set your calendars for Tuesday April 5, 2011, it’s gonna be one hell of a ride!

Getting your girl into gaming…renewed!

A while back ago I wrote a post about getting your girl into gaming. (link)

Here is a follow up on that post.  Since I got my wife into gaming on the xbox360 her gaming IQ and knowledge of the genre has grown. So has her interest in games.  Since gaming on the xbox 360 can be such a social experience it has been a blast to see her meet fellow girl gamers.  But guys listen up.  There is another side, so to speak about getting your girl into gaming…not a bad thing just something to be ready for.

360fob-1 orange_box_360 devilmaycry4

Let’s say I wanted to play a single player game…my wife would be left out with nothing to do.  Not because she wanted to play with me…it’s just that we have 1 360 system.  I have over 45 xbox 360 games and a lot of them are single player.  Or there would be times where she wanted to play one thing and I wanted to play another.  She loves Halo 3, I do as well, but Call of Duty 4 ws calling my name recently and there is no split screen options on that game.  So she would be left out.  This didn’t lead to any arguments but there were times when I wanted one thing and she wanted another.  Two gamers one system go figure.

The solution: BUY HER OWN SYSTEM!

I got her a xbox 360 system pro (20 gig) with a controller, wifi- adapter to go online from her studio, and her own copy of Gears of War 2.  (So that makes 4 copies of that game I bought!) I tell ya…it was one of the best purchases I made in years.

I may have bought a 360 for her…but in doing so I got me a 360 as well.  I have my own system again…not that sharing one with my precious wife was a bad thing…but gamers you understand, you need your own system…I know my wife is happy to have hers.

Here is a link to her latest post on gaming.

So guys listen up…getting your girl into gaming may lead to more expensive purchases down the road.  Now I have to get 2 copies of games that we want to play together.  The gaming experience is so much richer for us now though…when we played Gears of 2 last night she got to play with 1 group of friends while I played with another.  We played together, but we also have the choice to get our own gaming experiences as well.

Well I really looking forward to all of the co-op games coming out in the future especially Resident Evil 5 which will be perfect.  I character is a Girl (Sheva) and the other is Chris.

Happy gaming to all!!! (to you of all babe!)

We all are cogs in the Gears of War…

So, who all bought Gears of War 2 the day it came out? I did.  I bought three copies actually, 1 for me, and 2 for the last two contest winners…  A LOT of my friends bought it…everyone in the gamestop I was at bought one.  Well it turns out a lot gamers wanted to sign up and the continue the fight against the Locust Horde…Gears of War 2 did pretty good for a day one release on a Friday to the the tune of 2.1 million copies sold on day 1.

Like a Brumak busting out the gates Gears stole the show for game sales this Weekend!

Gears of War offers an experience to Gamers of many different skill levels.  The team at Epic Reeeallly put a lot of effort into making this game fun and enjoyable. I have to start with Horde…

If Horde released by itself (with more levels than 50) it would have been a nice addition to anyone’s xbox 360 game library.  In fact, if more shooters had a “horde” mode; (hint) halo series fans would be going nuts for that as well.  Imagine starting with fighting grunts in any of the multiplayer maps on Halo 3 in level 1. By level 4 you are fighting more grunts and jackals, then by level 15 brutes and Hunters show up.  With each level you pass the enemies would adapt to your fighting styles and change their plan of attack. By level 50 your team would be fighting all levels of Covenant and Flood with Vehicles intact…that would be nice….but Epic made it a reality.

In Horde you and up to 4 friends face off against the on-coming forces of Locust Soldiers.  In each battle you are scrambling to help your team defend an area by taking down an incoming squad of Locust.  What I loved about this mode of the game is that after each Wave you beat they will adapt to your teams battle tactics.  Lets say you cruise through 5 levels pretty easy.  The game has a unique spawn system and enemy selection that will counter your actions.  Team work is essential in this mode.  Stray to far from the group to get some ammo you may need to be revived…in a hurry.  I have played it by myself, with my wife, and with up to 4 others.  Nothing beats having 5 people on a team together working to take down the Horde…

Horde is what a lot of gamers have been asking for.  It is really fun to play against other people in death matches and other modes, but Horde is something else.  It combines a brand of teamwork against a common enemy without the pressures of playing Gears of ‘Pro’ players.  The Multi-player modes are interesting as well, but Horde is a different breed of fun that is a fan service done right!

Gears of War 1 = pretty cool but short campaign…Gears of War 2 = Answers the basic question of why we are fighting, and gives a lot of moments to look and say let’s kill those Locust!  The campaign is really roboust this time around.  I would say between campaign and horde alone Gears of War 2 is the best shooter on the 360 this year. The best thing about the campaign are the large battles.  Gears of war 1 was nice, but the battles never got out of hand in size.  Gears 2 opens the world up to gamers to see the size of this war.  This is one war I wouldn’t wish upon any nation.

I won’t go into details of specific events…but gamers will love the battles and overall story direction in Gears of War 2.  Single player is nice, but the game is really made to be played Co-op.  There is nothing like going to war with a buddy by your side.  Some people may be dissappointed that it is not 4 player co-op, but I think a lot of the battles would have been watered down if two other players joined this battle.

As you can see from these screen shots..Gears 2 is the best looking game on 360 right now.  I would go on to say one of the best looking game in this generation on any home console.  It doesn’t have the complex story from Half-life or the art direction fron Bioshock, but to find a better action shooter will be hard to find.

The controls for this game are spot on.  If you played a shooter before you will pick this game up and hit the ground running.  This game is near perfection in every way possible.  BUY THIS GAME if you have the ability to do so…it will be worth your money and time.  The Holiday season of gaming has started and Epic has struck the first and possbly the strogest blow this season.  Finding a better game this holiday season will be hard to do.  If you don’t own a 360 yet…what are you waiting for!!!

And the winner is…

A larger version of the creepy image of characters from the Silent Hill series.

He did an awesome job in showing the creepiness of these characters through each character’s body posture and stance.  Great colors and just a fantastic job Luke!  I really dig his art style.  Check out more of his work here!

And what game is he gonna get…

He chose (to no surprise) Gears of War 2!

The piece that didn’t win was no slouch either.  It was done by Jordan Kendall aka Madman.

This kid is young but has great potential!  Check out some more of his work.

Here is a link to more of his work jordankendall.

Thanks again Jordan for participating! Keep up the good work! And big thanks as well to Luke for participating in back to back contest!

More interviews and other gaming art coming soon!

Ok..I’m back…here we go!

Sorry about the last two months…It did feel good to just enjoy some good gaming that is for sure.  Here is a link to what I have been up to with the gaming world…

that is right…39 days straight of playing games…

With Gears of War 2 and Left four Dead coming out, Fall Out 3 already out, Dead Space, Fable II…Gaming is really easy to fall into these days…

But I will be steping back into art world really soon!

I only had two entries to the October contest, but there were both really nice.  Here they are…

A character from Dead Space…”Necro-morph”

And two characters from Silent Hill “Pyramid Head” and “Nurse.”

I will announce the winner soon.

With great sadness I have to also announce that the October winner will be the last prize awarded this year.  I am revamping my site and with the cost of that I won’t be do the monthly contest until February 09.

The blog with be going strong and I will be awarding people with smaller prizes like gift cards, Microsoft points, Wii points, and other things as well.

But when the site opens (no date just yet) it will be smooth as butter and mega easy to navigate.  Thanks again to all who have come to this little blog and checked out the ramblings of this gamer/artist!

Leave a comment just to say hi and let me know who reads this blog!  Also write why you like it, if you like it, so I know what I else I could do to make this grow into something larger than what it is now.

Thanks for reading!

Taking a look back…are we spoiled???

Take a look back and remember the times of previous video game generations and just think how blessed we have been with the number of great titles that have come across our television sets…

Even look back just four years ago…when The Game Cube, Xbox, and Playstation 2 rocked everyone’s entertainment system…

We didn’t have gems like Bioshock, Metal Gear Solid 4, or GTA 4…what graced our systems 4 years ago were titles like Jet Li Rise to honor…Red Dead Revolver and Psi Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy.

Which one would you choose…this or

 Jet Li: Rise to Honor

We take certain things for granted as gamers these days.  The industry has exploded in terms of what games have been released in this generation that we are currently in.  And since we are so used to seeing these graphics and gameplay now…we are a little spoiled.

The updated graphics engines alone are reasons for any gamers now a days to purchase new titles…look at the the games being released…Let’s take two titles same name different console generations…

Area 51 for the PS2 and Xbox.

Blacksite: Area 51 PS3 and Xbox 360.

…Look at the difference in these two games…they speak for themselves…  Area 51 was a decent FPS for the Xbox and PS2 and it was ok, solid at best.  It received some decent reviews(about an 8.0 average) And Blacksite: Area 51 came out with more of a whimper…pretty good visuals.  Some great battles in there as well…but it came out really at the wrong time.  (In the middle of a Bioshock, Halo 3, Call of Duty 4 Sandwich!) But still an ok game!

Look at Halo 2…

…and Halo 3

…two great games generations apart…

Even titles like Jade Empire which looked beautiful back in the day…compare it with Mass Effect…Not just in terms of graphics…but the entire gameplay itself is not even close to it’s masterpiece cousin that released in 2007.

Jade Empire…good game

Mass Effect…epic life experience…

I remember paying 50 bucks happily for half-life 2 for xbox and playing through that load crazy game…only to pay 60 bucks 3 years later for the Orange Box which includes half-life 2, episode 1, episode 2, portal, and team fortress on a single dvd…

Half life 2 on xbox…

..VS. The Orange Box!

Half-life 2
Half-life 2

Team Fortress 2

Team Fortress 2

One game that had so long of load times in there, vs 5 games in 1!  You tell me which one was a better purchase!

We are getting a lot for our money these days.  Our games had multiplayer in them in the past yeah, but now so many games are getting released to have a social network party going! Take GTA San Andreas, and compare it to GTA IV….the difference is ridiculous.  You could already play San Andreas for a while, but now you could play GTA IV for like months and still find new things to do because of the multiplayer features…

Take a look at the top games of 2005 when the xbox 360 first came on the scene… 2005 was a great year for gamers

We had Resident Evil 4 (Cult Classic-Changed the way we play games today) Shadow of the Colossus (Great game just didn’t sell as much as it should) Jade Empire…

Those were heavy hitters yes..but look at the other games that were at the top of the list. Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks. Heroes of the Pacific, The Incredible Hulk:Ultimate Destruction, more greats like Devil May Cry 3, and Splinter Cell Chaos Theory.  The Warriors also released that year (great co-op beat’em up!) Guitar Hero (debut!) and also Prince of Persia The two Thrones…True Crime: New York snuck in there as a great sandbox action game as well.

Pretty good year yes… but in the year when the 360 debuted the regular consoles still stole the show.  So we really can’t count the Next gen (our current gen) until 2006 (even though call of duty 2 was awesome on the 360).

2006 was another good year for games.  The xbox 360 had full year under it’s belt and the PS3 and Wii launched. We saw great titles like Gears of War( One of the best co-op games ever…graphically just a powerhouse) Resistance Fall of man (only real reason for owning a PS3 at this time…)  The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (only real reason to own a Wii at this time!)

2006 also had Rainbow Six Vegas (Giant sleeper hit) Splinter Cell Double Agent, Final Fantasy 12, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Saints Row, Dead Rising (great title only missing online multiplayer) Bully, Scarface, Guitar Hero II, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and  The Elder Scrolls Oblivion.

Great Year for a last stand of the PS2, but clearly the xbox 360 stretched it’s muscle with many knock out titles wetting the appetite of many gamers.  It would be hard to top Gears, Resistance, and The twillight princess..but 2007 was immense…

2007 was and I will go on Record as saying, the best year of gaming in my lifetime.  The Year starting slowly with a couple of hits like Crackdown, God of War II, Super Paper Mario, then we saw hits like Ghost Recon Advance War Fighter 2, Then hits like the Darkness, Metroid Prime 3, Blue Dragon…Heavenly Sword, Quake Wars Enemy territories, Guitar Hero III, then the holiday season came. The games listed above were winners already, then titles started to drop like wildfire…HALO 3, CALL OF DUTY 4, Assassin’s Creed, MASS EFFECT, ROCK BAND, CRYSIS, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, SUPER MARIO Galaxy, THE ORANGE BOX, Rachet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, BIOSHOCK… what a holiday.

My eyes are still glowing from these sure fire hits…so many Triple A titles came out that Holiday season that some are were under the radar releases…

2008 has been an impressive year and may top 2007…with releases already of GTA 4 and Metal Gear Solid 4.  We have Gears of War 2 coming and Resistance 2 coming Left 4 Dead looks promising, Fall out 3, and Fable 2 speaks for themselves, Guitar Hero World Tour, Possible Prince of Persia, Little Big Planet, EndWar, Halo Wars, Rock Band 2, Far Cry 2, Dead Space, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Spore (Finally)

And in 2009 some titles that look amazing are Resident Evil 5, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Borderlands, Killzone 2…man pretty good time to be a gamer! I haven’t listed all the games…just a few gems…

Gamers…come on admit it… we are spoiled.
