Baby I’m back!!!

I know it’s been a while… what, like two years or so… but that is how life goes sometimes… I don’t have time for playing games like I used to… but I want to get back into doing more interviews with artist in the industry and posting about some great games soon…

I have been more an artist who digs games lately… but believe me I am still a gamer who digs art at heart.

Here are some samples of the works I have done in the game area… as you can see there has been a big progression over the time.

And the winner is…

Lukedenby!

survival_horror_by_lukedenby

A larger version of the creepy image of characters from the Silent Hill series.

He did an awesome job in showing the creepiness of these characters through each character’s body posture and stance.  Great colors and just a fantastic job Luke!  I really dig his art style.  Check out more of his work here!

And what game is he gonna get…

20303_gears_of_war_2-v22

He chose (to no surprise) Gears of War 2!

The piece that didn’t win was no slouch either.  It was done by Jordan Kendall aka Madman.

This kid is young but has great potential!  Check out some more of his work.

Thanks again Jordan for participating! Keep up the good work! And big thanks as well to Luke for participating in back to back contest!

More interviews and other gaming art coming soon!

And the winner is…

Whew…this was a lot harder the second time around. Again thanks to all the artist who spent their time on creating some cool video game art! I appreciate it, and the readers appreciate it! I created this blog, and future site as something for the average gamer /artist could participate in.

You don’t have to be best artist in the world to win the monthly contest. Soon I will be adding some video game trivia questions in for a chance to win some other cool prizes as well so stay tuned for that!

Ok…thanks to all that have commented on the pieces.  It’s good to see artist get support! As stated in the previous blog, the comments were used to HELP me decide (not decide) on who the winner will be.

When looking at the criteria on who should win I looked at a couple of things. Originality. Not just in the characters chosen (people all chose fantastic battles and I would love to see them all unfold!) By originality I looked at the poses that the characters where in and the overall illustration. I am an artist so I love seeing NEW things.  Using poses that are pre-existing may look cool, however I see it as an easy way out…

If I am shelling out 60 bucks (plus tax and shipping) of my hard my hard earned cash I don’t want to see something that could have been photo-manipulated, by taking two pieces of art that already existed.  It may look cool, but I want to see artist push beyond what it easy…bottom line I want NEW art. Reference is needed but don’t just follow it, use it to create something totally brand spankin’ NEW! To anyone who submitted DO NOT take any offense to what was written. All the pieces submitted were great!

Alright enough talk. And the winner based on my thoughts posted before is…

yes…kalel06!! He took these characters and made them his own. At first glance when I saw it…I thought…pretty cool and left it at that. Then as an artist I looked at how I would have done this piece. It must have taken him forever (not that you have to work forever on a piece…) but the little details start to surface.

The patterns in Nariko’s outfit, the scars on Kratos, the details on both their weapons. I searched long and hard to see if there was anything similar to this piece on the web, and there wasn’t. He went ground up and crafted a nice little VS piece. I also love the flames in the background and the lighting effects used on the characters and their weapons…the chains alone must have taken forever.  I drew both these characters myself long before this tournament, so I really understand the details in both.  (Nariko’s hair alone is amazing!)

He took his time and was patient in putting together a well crafted piece for the contest. So congrats to Kalel06!

As promised his game will be shipped and he chose…

The average gamer able to win a brand new 60.00 game for their hard efforts in creating some art…the is the reason why I created the contest!

Once again, the contest for September is called Villains. Choose an antagonist, villain, thug, or bad guy from any game past or present to illustrate. Think about originality…don’t just send images that look like

Because I can already see these poses done by the people who originally illustrated it. Don’t be limited by someone else’s ideas…push it beyond what is already done. Make it your own! Have your villain terrorizing a hero… it doesn’t have to be a single shot of a character. As long as the villain is the main focus of the illustration you have your shot at winning any game you want (60.00 max!!!) Deadline is September 30.

Thanks again!

Coming up…an interview with a Spook aka… the winner of the August contest Kalel06!

Photoshop Rewind…

Sorry about the week long absence from blogging…been pretty busy lately, but have some cool posts coming up this week!  First of all I want to say thanks to all who have come here and visit!  And another thank you for those who have left comments, they are much appreciated!  It has been a pleasure bringing you all the cool interviews of the fantastic artist that have agreed to come!

Photoshop Rewind is just a Reverse break down of an illustration I did.  Note: You may want to read this blog from end to beginning since I did it reversed!  Hope you enjoy!

The FINAL! This is the Hovering Hippo.  A quick photoshop illustration I did last night in about 1 hour 45 minutes.  (Finished 15 minutes early!) (2 hour limit)  11 layers in photoshop 7 done with a mouse.

Step: 10  On a different layer doing some clouds for the background.  Yes Clouds..(The Hovering Hippo!)

Step: 9  Time is running short.  30 minutes to go before the 2 hour mark… layering in a background color.

Step 8:  Getting some shadows established here.  Trying to use colors instead of blacks to give a richer use of shadows.

Step 7:  Working towards getting it more polished.  I wanted to finish the whole thing in under 2 hours so my time is running out.  Been about 1 hour from the start so far.

Step 6:  Adding more lights and overlay colors to flesh out the hippo.  I am not really caring about the final image just, still playing with overall feel of the piece.

Step 5: Adding more lights.  Using lighter colors to add tone to the image as supposed to only working with darker shades.

Step 4:  Really starting to add some color to the hippo now.  Still working in tone right now to get the lighting of the hippo.

Step 3:  More shading of the hippo.  Using different opacities and size brushes.

Step 2:  Trying something different here really.  Layering in some tones to get shadows down.  I don’t really want to use any reference for this piece only because this is just a quick exercise.  Now for a full color final illustration reference would be something I would go for to get the details of how a hippo actually looks.  (Like textures for coloring, shadows etc…)

Step 1: Alright just a quick pencil sketch to get things started.  Maybe when I get a wacom I can someday skip this sketch-step, but for right now every piece I do really starts with a pencil or pen drawing.  This is the blue print for the final illustration.

There we go!  Hope you guys enjoyed the Rewind!

Here is the final once again.

Meet andy!!! (En Di)

Andy is an artist who has a ton of energy! You can see it in his work. I haven’t spoken with him in person (he lives in Malaysia!) but I could just imagine this guy having a good time and goofing around every chance he gets! He has a lot of personality and his artwork shows it! He was a little shy about being interviewed, but I am glad he did agree to it, so thanks a bunch for the nice chat Andy.

Andy has a really nice style! His comic spreads have an overall nice free feel to them as well. One thing I love about doing these interviews, is seeing all the different styles and hearing about different approaches to art from different artist.

It is a true blessing for me that each artist interviewed has shared their valuable time to answer some questions and allow their art to be displayed here so a big thanks to all who have participated thus far! I also think

every interview so far has been a blast because of each person’s individuals personality! Everyone answers the questions differently..some answer with long statements… and some are short and sweet! Nothing wrong with either in my book! Without further hold ups…here is the interview!

Questions by me…answers and ALL Art by Andy.

Meet Cuson!!!

One good thing about the internet is the beauty is has to connect people from all over the world.  It brings like minded people together in a place to communicate, share ideas, and share common joys!  The next gamer/artist being interviewed is like the other people I would have never met without the internet. Yet he is very different as well.  He didn’t feel comfortable with a normal interview which is by all means ok.  English is his second language so keep that in mind when reading his portion of the post.  (English may be his second language, but man his interview portion that he wrote is a lot better than a lot of people born here!)

I completely became a fan of his stuff the minute I saw it, and you can’t blame me…this guy has some skills! Plenty and plenty of skills…

And you know to have talent is one thing..but I love when an artist isn’t changed by their success in art.  Thousands of miles away, yet very humble…well on with show!

I am a huge resident evil fan by the way!!!

All artwork in this post is by cuson.

Instead of an interview maybe you could write a little about yourself and tell what you do for a living.  The pictures will speak for themselves.

Hi,

I will try to decribe about myself….

I am a chinese and from hong kong. I’ve worked in advertising agent as a visualizer since i gained a diploma from a design institute.  The main duty of my job is drawing TV storyboards, but most of my satisfaction is not related to my full-time job but working with the computer in leisure time.  I like to create original characters and scenes more than copy from a existing reference media.

It makes me feel leisurely and carefree during the drawing process.  and I enjoy it very much.  If my works can entertain or impress people, I am grateful with it.

Let me share the way that I like to make my work usually.  when I have an idea, I draft it out on paper with pencil. Sometimes I use the pencil sketching directly by scanning it into the computer. Otherwise I redraw it using Painter or Photoshop and my Wacom. Normally, I quite like to do my work in the office, as that computer is faster and I will pay more attention to the drawing process.

It’s the same connection to the world through the Internet that has inspired much of my work. After the diffusion of the Internet, it became easier to view masterworks from all over the world. It really opened my eyes! I met so many new friends (local and overseas) who have the same ideals and hobbies. Sharing inspiration is very helpful.

I’m still working on my style and has a lot to learn, but i think the basics are always a good place to start for beginners. The fundamentals of pencil drawing and observation are very important to me.

thanks.

cuson.
